What is Engineering?
Engineering is a stream of science where scientific
principles are applied for developing machines, structures , or any material thing for the welfare or ease of life for mankind. Engineering
word is derived from Latin word “Ingenuim”
meaning ”cleverness” and ingeniare, meaning to “to devise”.
Main Branches of Engineering
Basically there are four main branches of
Engineering which may be further divided in many other branches. These basic
branches are:
1.
Mechanical Engineering.
2.
Chemical Engineering.
3. Electrical Engineering.
4. Civil
Engineering.
After these basic four branches number of new Engineering
branches have been introduced which may be said as sub-branches of these basic
branches, few are listed below:
Naval engineering
mining engineering
manufacturing engineering
Accoustical engineering
Corroison engineering
Instrumentation and control engineering
Aerospace engineering
Automotive engineering
Computer Science
Electronics engineering
Information Technology
Textile E ngineering
Industrial Engineering
Material Engineering
Nuclear Engineering
Biomedical Engineering etc.
Entrance Exam for Engineering
To appear for Engineering exam one has to pass
SSC .Earlier there were two main entrance examination for admission in
Engineering colleges AIEEE and IIT JEE .But now AIEEE has been stopped and JEE
is the main entrance exam for entrance in Engineering colleges in all over
India. Alyough few private colleges conduct separate examination for admisiion
in their college .List of all the main entrance examinations is
given below:
JEE Main- National Testing Agency (NTA)
BITSAT- Birla Institute of technology and science
MU OET- Manipal Academy for Higher Education
VITEEE- VIT University
SRMJEE- SRM Institute of science and Technology
Counselling For Engineering Colleges in India
After result of the examination is declared
successful candidates have participate in online counseling depending on their
rank. Once online cousnelling is over , candidates are called on the basis of
their rank by counseling body to further finalise college , and branch
depending upon the vacant seats of national quota .Colleges are ranked on the
basis of their placements of students of their college. IIT s are top
engineering colleges ,followed by NITs and IITs .Then comes few reputed private
colleges and universities and State government colleges. After
national counseling , Technical university in every state conducts counseling
for their state quota.
Selected students get admissions in Bachelor of
Technology(B .Tech.), or Bachelor of Engineering(B.E.) in the college which is
graduation of for years.
FEE
Structure of Engineering in India
Approx Expenditure in Government engineering
colleges varies from Rs. 80000 to Rs 100000 per annum including Tution fee,
Hostel fee and Mess Fee .Tuition fee may be revised by government while Mess
fee may be revised by the collges depending on the expenditure.
Private colleges decide their
total annual fee depening on the facilities they provide to the students and
their fee is much gher compared to government colleges. Their annual fee may
vary from Rs.180000 to Rs. 400000 per annum.
Engineering
Placements in India
Before the completion of B.tech or(B.E.) int 3rd or
Final year private companies starts selecting students by visiting college
campus and conducts their test and interviews and selected students joins their
company after completion of Four year Degree. Sometimes company calls students
of defferent colleges at one college to appear for their recruitment drive.
Engineering
Career
Higher the number of Engineers in a country makes
country progressive and ecnomy strong. Career in different fields of
Engineering faces troubles sometimes .Mechanical Engineering is the only
evergreen branch till date .There has been tremendous opportunities for
software engineers worldwide since the automation and internet has been spread
worldwide. Although number of engineers in India has been increased year on
year ,Engineering as a career is losing its charm due to opening of lots of
private Engineering colleges without basic infrastructure facilities.
Still Engineering graduates with good knowledge
of their field making good progress in their career .Annual salary what engineering
graduates are receiving at the beginning of their career ranges from 3.5 lakhs
per annum to 1.5 crores per annum depending on the company and job profile
offered by the recruiting company. Due to increased competition and numbers of
Engineers , there is huge shortage of jobs at current market conditions .Hence
seats of many Engineering colleges remaining vacant these years.
Government and PSU Jobs for Engineers in India
Although in India there are opportunities to work
in Government sector and Public sector units which provide stable career with
limited growth. But opportunities are not available for every stream of
Engineering. Few branches which government companies and PSU recruit are:
Mechanical Engineering
Electrical Engineering
Electronics, Electronics and communication
Engineering
Civil Engineering
Instrumentation
IT and Computer Science
Even to get these Jobs
one has to qualify written examinations, Interviews . Now most of the PSUs
are recruiting on the basis of the performance in GATE examination , which are
basically conducted for the admission in the MTech. And then final selection on
the basis of performance in the interview conducted by company. Although few
companies are not conducting any interview.Few PSU and Government organization
which hire engineers are :
BHEL, BEl, ONGC,NTPC, BSNL, HAL, DRDO, BAARC ,
ISRO, AIRPORT AUTHORITY, AIR INDIA, MTNL,ITI, etc.
Annual salary in most of the Govt. organization
ranges from Rs. 4 lakhs per annum to 9.5 laks per annum.
