Two technologies are in limelight in now a days , first is 5G , and second is IOT  or Internet of things. So what really IOT is , and what will be its impact on us and society in coming days such are the question in the mind of a common man. Does the technologies shown in the Hollywood movies going to be reality ,can't say but let us understand basics of IOT.

What is IOT

At present what we think of Internet is connection worldwide to enable data transfer from one place to other place. But things will be changed after introduction of IOT. Although IOT is already there from long time , you might be thinking where.

Let me make it clear , Internet of things means interconnection between physical objects , machines like computers, cameras, home appliances, vehicles etc where they can communicate with each other. Total computers and mobile devices which are connected to internet today is approx. 18 billion that is more than double of total population of whole world. There is saturation of IP addreses in IPV4 but IPV6 can provide approx. 3.14X(10 )̭̭̭38 addresses to the available devices.

Then What is new about  IOT?

 IOT which is hyped now a days is all about Machine to Machine communication  without or least human intervention. The question is now arises how it can happen.

How will IOT work

 Definitely it is going to happen. From a long time researchers are working on artificial intelligence which is going to be a game changer. While using a driver-less car you just need to tell your destination rest will be done by car itself with the help of cloud base server which will guide your car to your destination. The only thing required is seamless connectivity to the internet.

Driver-less car is just one of the application of IOT ,application of  IOT  is really vast. It will change various industries starting from manufacturing sector to service sector. With intelligent devices and machines it will be quite easy to handle the things from one corner of the world to the other corner of the world.

e-SIM

Few months back there was a viral news about changing mobile number from 10 digits to 12 digits in India. Actually it was about e-SIM, which will be in build in the new cars and devices. e-SIM is a part of IOT . While connected to Internet , a unique IP (IPV4/IPV6) will be allotted to that particular device on the internet  based on the e-SIM of the device. 

With the unique IP  any device can be identified among billions of devices on the internet . With the help of Machine IP any command can be given to that device from anywhere in the world and these commands will be executed with the help of sensors already installed on the Machines. 

These commands need not to be given by Human only , any intelligent device can do it itself .Intelligent devices are the devices which are  made intelligent enough by Artificial Intelligence to make a decision and take action  as per need or demand of situation .

Google Home and Amazon Alexa based speakers are the two examples of initial IOT based devices .Google Home & Amazon Echo dot is voice controlled speaker .

GOOGLE HOME

 Google home is other smart device to make your home a smart home  like Amazon Echo Google Home is also voice controlled speaker system and can:

·      Place calls, make video calls, set appointments etc on voice command.

·      Can control smart device at Home , like changing AC temperature, changing channels, playing favorite program from Netflix or amazon prime etc.

·      Booking of cabs, movie tickets, table at restaurants on voice commands.

 Lot of other things can be done by giving voice commands to Google Home.

PROS and Cons

PROS

There are various pros for IOT based services as it things will be easier with the AI based devices . IOT can play a major role in the field of Education, Health , Manufacturing and service sectors.  

CONS

Intervention of machines in the life of man will increase further reducing interdependence of humans.  With the increasing application of IOT based services automation will increase further thus causing threat of increased unemployment.

Security Threat

Although with the advent of new technologies work is being done on cybersecurity , still with intelligent devices interconnected through internet any threat to internal security of any country can't be denied. Various Hollywood movie scenes which seems to be hypothetical at present may become reality in coming few years with IOT.
