JRF stands for Junior Research Fellow, as the name suggests person working as JRF has to assist in research related works. Usually they have to work under any professor, working on any project assigned by any of the government or other agency. JRF is eligibility for joining as a lecturer in any university or college .
Process of Selection as JRF
Notifications for JRF exams are issued by UGC and CSIR every year by the name UGC (NET), and CSIR (NET) .National Eligibilty Test(NET) is also an eligibilty exam for the post of Assistant professor in an Indian University. To apply for the post of Lecturer in any University it is mandatory to qualify JRF exam.
Sometimes notification for JRF is issued by Individual IIT or NIT for any project for that they invite applications from GATE or NET qualified candidates , no separate exam is conducted. After successful completion of two years as JRF candidate may be allowed to enroll in PhD in the same college or Institute.
Eligibilty
To apply for the post of JRF candidate must posses post Graduation Degree. CSIR takes JRF exams for only science streams ,Chemical Sciences (ii) Earth, Atmospheric, Ocean and Planetary Sciences (iii) Life Sciences (iv) Mathematical Sciences and (v) Physical Sciences.So candidates with post graduation or in Final year of post Graduation in any of the eligible science branches can apply in CSIR(NET), for JRF. Graduate students can also apply with the condition of completing post graduation in two years.
While UGC conducts exams for 90 streams including Engineering .UGC not allows graduate candidates to apply for JRF.

Eligibility for Foreign Nationals

AGE LIMIT
Maximum age limit is 28 years for general candidates and 5 years relaxation given to candidates belonging SC/ST/PWD category.
Fellowships
After qualifying JRF exam candidates has to work as JRF in any university where UGC or CSIR provide fellowships of Rs. 25000/ month and HRA if hostel facility is not available. These fellowships are awarded for two years, after two years if Candidate wants to continue fellowship he has to enroll in PhD course failing to which fellowship terminates. After successful completion of two years as JRF university may post candidate as lecturer if vacancy is available, or candidate can apply in other university for the post of lecturer.
Who should apply for JRF?
People interested in teaching and research work should apply for JRF .As its deals with research work. As a JRF you have to engage in various activities related to research under Project Head , who is working on any project.It Involves very hectic schedule like attending seminars, writing notes, making presentations and other work as per instruction of Project head.
Difference between JRF (NET) and NET for assistant professor post
There is no difference in the exam but eligibility .While age limit for JRF is 28 years there is no limit for the Assistant professor .NET is eligibilty to apply for the post of assistant professor in any university while , Fellowship is provided to candidates joining as JRF for period of two years , which may be extended for one year.
